Striping and Signage for EV Charging Stalls

Learn how to plan, stripe, and sign EV charging stalls in Indianapolis so they survive freeze-thaw cycles, plow season, and ADA requirements without shutting down your lot.

I got a call last winter from a property manager in Fishers. He'd just finished a big EV charger install — new pedestals, conduit, the works. But the striping crew had come the week before, before the electrical trench was even backfilled. So the green paint got cut in half by a patch of fresh asphalt that never got restriped. Then the snowplows came through and scraped up half of his markings. Tenants were parking in the access aisle, blocking chargers, and leaving frustrated. That's when he called us.

EV charging stall striping isn't just slapping down some green paint. It's a whole coordination puzzle. You need the layout to match the charger locations, the ADA requirements to line up, and the materials to survive Indy winters. I've seen too many lots where somebody painted first and asked questions later. That tends to cost double in the long run.

Plan First, Paint Later

Before you order a single gallon, walk the site with whoever's doing the charger install. In places like Carmel, Zionsville, and Noblesville, property managers often call us after the pedestals are already in. Then we have to work around concrete pads, bollards, and conduit paths that might not leave enough room for a compliant stall. That's backwards.

We start with a site walk. Measure existing lines, confirm where each charger will sit, check slopes for ADA, and map out traffic flow. For a strip mall in Greenwood with angled parking, the EV bays might work better near the front but not blocking deliveries. For an office lot in Avon, you might put them along the side to keep the main entrance clear.

One thing I always tell facility managers: if the trenching for electrical is still open, don't stripe. Wait until they backfill and patch. Otherwise you'll be redoing half your work. We worked with an EV charger vendor in Plainfield who kept changing the pedestal locations by a foot here and there. If we'd striped early, we'd have been repainting three times. Better to sequence it right.

Materials That Survive Freeze-Thaw and Plows

Indiana winters are brutal on pavement markings. Snowplows scrape, salt eats away at paint, and freeze-thaw cycles pop lines loose. For EV stall striping, you want materials that hold up. We recommend MMA (methyl methacrylate) for high-wear areas like the stall outlines and EV plug icons. It bonds to asphalt like a thin plastic shell and lasts years longer than regular traffic paint. Thermoplastic is great for legends and arrows, but it needs a clean, dry surface and a proper melt. High-solids acrylic works fine for low-traffic areas like a small office lot in Brownsburg, but it won't survive a plow blade as well.

Whatever system you pick, add reflective glass beads. Without them, your green bays disappear at night. Winter in Central Indiana means it's dark by 5:30 p.m. Think about that tenant in Fishers I mentioned earlier: after we restriped with MMA and beads, you could see the EV stalls from the entrance even with a dusting of snow.

Don't forget surface prep. If the asphalt is raveling or there are oil spots from old cars, the paint won't stick no matter how good it is. Before we stripe any EV area, we look for cracks, potholes, or leftover trench cuts. Sometimes we need to do infrared asphalt repair first — that's a patch that heats the surrounding asphalt so it bonds better. Signage and Symbols That Make Sense

Green paint alone doesn't tell people an EV stall is EV-only. You need signs. And they need to follow MUTCD guidance and local rules. In Indianapolis, private lots can paint green fields for EV charging, but the signs are what actually enforce it. We usually recommend a combination: green bay with a white EV plug stencil, plus a post-mounted sign that says "EV Charging Only" with the right symbol. If the stall is ADA accessible, you need the blue markings and the proper sign too.

Here's a common mistake: painting a green bay but using the wrong shade. It looks like a landscaped island at night. Use a bright, high-contrast green that reads as "EV" from a distance. We also add white legends like "EV" and "NO PARKING" in the adjacent fire lanes. And don't forget wayfinding arrows from the lot entrance. If someone has to wander around looking for a charger, they'll get annoyed and maybe park in a regular spot. A few arrows and a sign at the main drive make a huge difference.

We did a lot in Westfield where the property manager wanted to use custom stencils. We printed a mock-up and laid it out on a test patch before committing. That way he could see the size and spacing. Always do a mock-up, especially for ADA spaces where the access aisle needs to be clear of any paint.

Coordinate with Contractors and Utilities

EV charger projects involve a lot of moving parts. You've got the electrician, the charger vendor, maybe AES Indiana for utility work, and then us for striping. Scheduling matters. We like to stripe after the electrical is done but before the grand opening. If the utility has to come back and dig, you'll have a patch in the middle of your green bay. That happened in a downtown Indianapolis lot. AES Indiana had to upgrade a transformer, and their contractor cut through the new striping. We had to restripe that one stall after the patch cured. It's avoidable if you sequence the work right.

For phasing, most properties can't shut down the whole parking lot. We stripe at night or on weekends. For a busy medical office in Midtown, we did half the lot one weekend, then the other half the next. We used cones and barriers to keep cars off the fresh paint for the required cure time. Usually that's 30-60 minutes for acrylic, a few hours for MMA, and longer for thermoplastic in cold weather. But we always tell managers: don't open the stalls until the paint is dry to the touch and fully cured. Tracking paint across the lot looks terrible and leads to expensive cleanup.

Maintenance: When to Restripe

EV stall markings don't last forever. In Indy, with plows and salt, we tell clients to plan on restriping every 18 to 36 months. High-traffic lots might need touch-ups sooner. A quick visual check each spring and fall will tell you if the green is fading or the beads are worn off. If the lines are still visible but dull, a light restripe over the top can refresh them without full removal.

Also, keep snow storage away from the EV bays. If the plow driver piles snow on top of the green paint, you'll scrape it all up when they move it back. That's why we always recommend bollards and wheel stops to protect the pedestals. And make sure the snow removal crew knows where the EV stalls are so they plow around them, not over them.

Get a Plan, Not Just a Quote
